Most of what fills a Chattanooga garage leaves on a junk removal truck the same day. A short list does not. Finding out which is which on pickup day is how a morning gets wasted.
The line has nothing to do with how much something looks like trash. It comes down to what a disposal facility will legally accept in a mixed load, and anything corrosive, flammable, toxic or under pressure fails that test. A few heavy or specially handled items ride along fine and change the price instead. All three groups are below, along with where the refused ones actually have to go.
What Can a Junk Removal Crew Take in Chattanooga?
Almost everything a household or a business actually wants gone:

What Cannot Go on the Truck at All
These are refused everywhere, not just here. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency groups leftover household products that are corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive as household hazardous waste, and ordinary landfill loads are kept clear of them for that reason.

What Rides Along but Carries an Add-On?
This middle group goes on the truck. The add-on, and the reason for it, get said before anything is lifted.
Electronics and screens
Televisions, monitors and computer equipment carry an e-waste add-on because they are routed to proper handling rather than a landfill load. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
Sealed-system units hold refrigerant, which has to be recovered before the shell is scrapped. That extra step is why they price differently from a dryer or a dishwasher.
Tires
Tire disposal is charged separately at the facility, per tire, so it is passed through the same way rather than buried inside a load price.
Construction debris
Drywall, tile, brick and concrete are dense enough that disposal is billed by weight instead of by volume. A quarter load of concrete works the truck harder than a full load of couch cushions.
Hot tubs, pianos and safes
All three are labor, not volume. A hot tub gets cut into sections on site, a piano needs extra hands and slow stairs, and a safe is a safe. How these land in a price is covered on the junk removal cost page.
Where Do the Off-Limits Items Go Instead?
- Latex paint. Pull the lid, let it dry solid (kitty litter or a hardener speeds it up), and it stops being a liquid. Oil-based paint and solvent never qualify and stay hazardous waste.
- Motor oil and antifreeze. Most auto parts stores and service shops take used fluids back. Call the one nearest you before you drive over with a full jug.
- Propane tanks. The exchange cage at the hardware store or the grocery store is the simplest exit for a standard grill tank.
- Pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents. These need a household hazardous waste collection. Check the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County solid waste pages for the current drop-off schedule, since collection events move.
- Electronics you want to handle yourself. Retailer and manufacturer take-back is the usual route, and the Environmental Protection Agency's electronics recycling guidance lists how those programs work.
- Asbestos and medical waste. An abatement contractor and a regulated medical disposal service, respectively. Neither one is a do-it-yourself job.
How Should You Sort Before the Crew Arrives?
- Walk the shelves first. The restricted items in a garage are almost always on one shelf and under one sink. Most people find them on pickup day, with the truck already in the driveway. That's fine, it just turns a 20-minute job the night before into a scramble. Figure on 20 minutes and do it the night before.
- Give them their own corner. Anything on the refused list goes in a box away from the pile, so nothing gets loaded by accident and nothing gets missed.
- Flag the add-on items. Point out the TV, the fridge and the tires when you call. Everything that moves the number gets said before the truck rolls, not after.
- Set aside the donations. Usable items get donated and materials get recycled, so telling the crew what still has life in it changes where it ends up.
- Describe the pile on the phone. Simple jobs get priced over the phone. Bigger ones get a free walkthrough, and you hear an upfront number before anyone lifts anything.
